English is not a fixed subject for school exams but a vital communication skill for life, and we are the learners’ only tutors and role models. We need to make every effort to evaluate what we do in preparing young people and adults to use language effectively and meaningfully in globally diverse communities. We know the world – and English – is changing at an incredible pace, and so it is essential that we stay fully aware of the changing nature of language, as well as the varied, real-world learning objectives of our students.
We must therefore observe and address these needs with an evolving lingua franca in mind. We have to constantly and bravely consider these crucial questions: What is proper English? Which English do learners need and how will they use it? And how does this reflect our day-to-day ELT classroom practices and approaches? This presentation confronts realities to open minds and develop a mindset and approach to a more flexible ELT reality in the 21st century classroom.
